Manufacturing Industry in Indonesia: How is it?

There are many manufacturing companies in Indonesia that produce a wide variety of goods, from textiles and apparel to electronics and automotive parts. Some of the major manufacturing companies in Indonesia include:

1. Astra International

A diversified conglomerate with businesses in automotive, financial services, heavy equipment, agribusiness, infrastructure, logistics, and information technology.

Astra, which is the biggest publicly traded company in Indonesia, operates in six different business segments:

• Automotive

• Agribusiness

• Heavy equipment, mining and energy

• Financial services

• Information technology

• Infrastructure and logistics

Following the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s, Astra was able to achieve strong and sustainable growth. To accomplish this, Astra had to undergo restructuring and reorganization of its business model, which included a takeover by the Hong Kong-based Jardine Matheson Group in 1999 through its subsidiary Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd.

In recent years, Astra International has garnered numerous national and international corporate awards and has set an ambitious goal of establishing a global brand name that Indonesia can be proud of by 2020. As of 2015, the company employed over 225,580 individuals across 183 companies, including subsidiaries, associated companies, and jointly controlled entities.

From its humble beginnings as a small trading business founded by two brothers, William Soerjadjaya and Tjia Kian Tie, PT Astra International Tbk has evolved into an impressive conglomerate with a dominant presence in Indonesia. It is the largest publicly listed company on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) with a market capitalization exceeding seven percent. While the company's core business is in the automotive industry, it has diversified its portfolio to include other sectors and revenue streams.

Astra International commands a domestic market share of between 50 and 60 percent in the automotive industry. The company has an exclusive right to distribute Toyota vehicles in Indonesia through a jointly-controlled entity with Toyota Motor Corporation. Astra also collaborates with other automotive brands such as Daihatsu, Isuzu, Nissan Diesel, Peugeot, BMW cars, and Honda motorcycles.

Astra International, in addition to producing and distributing cars, provides consulting, insurance, and financing services to support sales of cars, motorcycles, and heavy equipment. The company also sells heavy equipment, related spare parts, and provides after-sales service for mining, plantation, construction, and forestry industries. Astra has also expanded into other sectors such as coal mining, agribusiness, information technology, infrastructure, and IT solution services.

Due to its diversified business, Astra International is present in almost every major sector of the Indonesian economy, reducing its dependence on any particular sector. While the automotive business remains Astra's core business, it has deliberately reduced its traditional dependence on car sales, which accounted for 80% of revenue in the early 2000s but now only 50%. The company is well-positioned to benefit from Indonesia's economic growth, natural resources, and infrastructure development. However, increasing competition in the car market and weaker coal prices may pose a challenge, along with concerns about a possible increase in interest rates and volatility in the rupiah. Despite this, Astra International is financially sound and poised for continued success as one of Indonesia's top companies.

The Unilever Indonesia office follows a modern open-space concept, and is equipped with facilities such as a nursery room, gym, and salon to ensure employees work comfortably.
