In the colonial era of the Dutch East Indies, the notion of modern sports was introduced, with football, badminton, and basketball gaining popularity among Indonesians. Following independence in 1946, the Indonesian National Sports Committee was established to bring together regional sports associations, and various sports facilities were constructed across the country, including the Ikada Field from 1951 to 1962. Under Soekarno's leadership, sports were viewed as a unifying force and a source of national pride, prompting the construction of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and its surrounding sports complex in 1962 in preparation for the fourth Asian Games held in Jakarta. Indonesia has since achieved success in badminton and is among the leading countries in various Southeast Asian sports.
Indonesian Football
The sport of football was introduced in 1914 during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. The competition between cities was dominated by only two teams, Soerabaja City and Batavia City. The history of football in Indonesia officially began on April 19, 1930, with the formation of the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) in Yogyakarta, led by Soeratin Sosrosoegondo. It can be said that the establishment of PSSI was driven by the nation's political interests, opposing colonialism, and aiming to cultivate nationalism among Indonesian youth through the sport of football.
The following is a list of champions won by the Indonesian national team:

Indonesian Badminton
Indonesia welcomed the sport of badminton in 1930, with conflicting sources pointing to either Sumatra or Jakarta as the first region to embrace it. By 1933, two badminton organizations had formed in Jakarta - the Bataviase Badminton Bond and the Bataviase Badminton League - which eventually merged into the Bataviase Badminton Unie.
Badminton's popularity surged in 1934 with the majority of championships held in Bandung, West Java. As more and more badminton associations sprung up, efforts were made to unify their direction through meetings held across Indonesia.
Finally, a congress convened in Bandung on May 5th, 1951, after various initiatives, which resulted in the establishment of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI). This congress was recorded as the first PBSI congress and paved the way for the formation of management structures at the provincial and municipal/district levels. Thus, an official badminton parent organization in Indonesia emerged to oversee the growth and development of the sport across the country.

Indonesian Basketball
The introduction and development of basketball in Indonesia is closely tied to the sport's spread from the United States, where it originated, to East Asian countries in accordance with the geopolitical conditions at the time. One of the countries targeted for basketball development by the YMCA was China, where Bob Baily was sent in 1894 to introduce the new sport. China began playing basketball, as did Japan and the Philippines in 1900.
In the 1920s, waves of Chinese nomads entered Indonesia and brought basketball with them, which had already been developed there for two decades. The nomads formed their own community and established Chinese schools, where basketball quickly became a mandatory sport for every student. As a result, basketball quickly developed in Chinese schools, and in the 1930s, basketball associations began to form in major cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Medan.
After Indonesia's independence in 1945, basketball began to gain wider recognition, especially in cities like Yogyakarta and Solo. At PON I in 1948, basketball was played at the national level for the first time, although the participants were limited to the strongest men from each Karesidenan and associations with native players. However, the Residency teams consisting of Chinese players demonstrated superior game technique compared to native players.
In 1951, national sports figure Maladi asked Tony Wen and Wim Latumeten to form a basketball organization in Indonesia. On October 23, 1951, the "All Indonesia Basketball Association" was formed, which was later refined and renamed the "Basketball Association of all Indonesia" or Perbasi. However, the Chinese basketball association initially refused to join Perbasi, leading to a Basketball Conference in Bandung in 1955, where Perbasi was established as the only parent organization for basketball in Indonesia. Perbasi was accepted as a member of FIBA in 1953, and Indonesia sent its first basketball team to the Manila Asian Games in 1954.
